Jordan Zimmermann put together a second consecutive scoreless start. On June 3, Zimmermann tossed 8 shutout innings against Philadelphia. Today, Zimmermann tossed a complete game shutout, allowing only 2 hits the entire game, while fanning 12 Padre batters. Zimmermann has now thrown 18 consecutive scoreless innings. His twelve strikeouts were a career high. The shutout represented Zimmermann’s third career shutout and sixth complete game.
Offensively, the Nats battered San Diego pitching for 13 hist and 6 runs. Ian Desmond, Danny Espinosa, Jayson Werth, and Kevin Frandsen had multi-hit games. Desmond went 2 for 5 and smacked a two run home run in the second inning to give the Nationals an the Nats and Zimmermann an early 3-0 run lead. Desmond has now homered in consecutive games and has hit four home runs in his last seven games. Espinosa went 3 for 4 and drive in two runs on an RBI single in the third inning to cap off the Nats six runs. Adam LaRoche and Frandsen each added an RBI.
The win improved the Nats to 32-29 on the season and are 5-2 in the month if June. The win also moved the Nats into a three way tie for first place in the National League East, along with Atlanta and Miami. The Nats begin a four game series tomorrow against the SF Giants.
