The Rebuild Continues

The Redskins are better, but aren’t quite there yet. One more solid draft and Washington will be ready to take the next step as a regular contender. This 2017 NFL Mock Draft addresses the areas of need as I see them moving forward.

In general, I believe the last two drafts were great, save two selections. I believe the Skins will long regret passing on Leonard Williams in 2015 and Andrew Billings this year. With only one defensive lineman drafted in the first five rounds (Jarvis Jenkins) in the past TWENTY years, this goes a long way explaining why the Redskins have such a porous run defense. It is no secret that football is won and lost in the trenches, despite the emergence of the passing game in the NFL. The Skins didn’t address the running game on either side of the ball and this mock takes steps in that direction.

NOTES: JUJU SMITH-SCHUSTER is the top receiver in the draft and paired with Josh Doctson outside, sets up the Skins for years to come. With DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon approaching $25,000,000.00 in salary for the 2017 season, this would allow Washington to move on. NICK CHUBB is a three down back and would be the most talented RB drafted by the Redskins in a LONG time. At the very least, Chubb would become part of a bruising tandem, along with Matt Jones. JALEN REEVES-MAYBIN is the top defender on a loaded Tennessee defense. Mobile, yet a hard hitting sure tackle, imagine the Vols star in tandem with 2016 2nd round pick Su’a Cravens! KENNY BIGELOW JR.is likely to sit out the 2016 due to injury, but the Redskins have shown an interest in getting value in mid-rounds with players who would have otherwise been drafted much higher. BAKER MAYFIELD runs arguably the most exciting, explosive offense in college football. It may come as a surprise to some, but 2016 COULD be the last season Kirk Cousins is wearing Burgundy and Gold. WILLIAM LIKELY is well known to local football fans as the top kick returner in the nation. A two-time All-B1G selection, Will could also cover slot receivers in dime packages. KYLE FULLER is a big center who nearly came out in this year’s draft. The Redskins kicked the can down the road, trying to get one last season out of Kory Lichtensteiger. EVAN BAYLIS is the kind of tight end the Redskins have been looking for to backup Jordan Reed and even serve in double tight end sets. Vernon Davis is likely one and done and Niles Paul may be better served as the leader of special teams, following his gruesome injury. MARCUS MAYE is the next great safety from the University of Florida. There is no way he will be available in the 7th round, but he was in our mock, so we took him!
