Congratulations to Caps’ forward Jason Chimera, who was awarded the third star of the week by the NHL.
Chimera tied for the League lead with six points (2-4—6) in three games, helping the Capitals (7-7-0, 14 points) pick up four out of a possible six points. He opened the week with 1 1—2, his second multi-point game of the season, in a 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks Oct. 28. Chimera then posted a career-high four points (1-3—4) in a 7-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Nov. 1, stretching his goal-scoring streak to a career-long four games (4 5—9). His three assists also matched a career high, first accomplished March 25, 2007, as a member of the Blue Jackets. The 34-year-old native of Edmonton, Alta., has played in 14 games this season, ranking fourth on the Capitals with 11 points (5-6—11).
Good to see Chimmer on a red hot streak. The Caps need to get scoring from forwards outside Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. It is particularly positive that Chimera has heated up due to the drop off in production last season. In 2010-11, Chimera scored 20 goals and added 19 helpers. Last season, his production dropped to just 3 goals and 11 assists in 47 games. Just 14 games into the season, Chimera is just 3 points away from his season totals last year in 47 games.
Ovechkin injury news . . . Ada Oates stated today that Alex Ovechkin’s status for tomorrow is game time decision. Ovechkin missed the game against the Flyers with an ‘upper body’ injury. Ovechkin was practicing today and we fully expect his return to the lineup tomorrow night.
