Hot Starts in the Nats Farm System

The Washington Nationals minor league system is off to their season starts.  Even though the season is quite young, we can take a look at the hot starts at each level.

Syracuse Chiefs (AAA) 4-1

Of course the big draw at Syracuse is the number two prospect int he Nationals system, SS Trea Turner.  And he is off to another fine start.  Turner is 7 for 15 (467)  at the plate  with a double, 5 runs scored, 1 RBI, and has stolen 3 bases.  He has a .533 slugging percentage and a .600 on base percentage.  It’s only a matter of time for Turner to DC.  OF Jason Martinson is also off to a hot start collecting 6 hits in 15 (.400) plate appearances.  He has 2 home ruins, 3 runs score,d and 4 RBI.  He has posted an early .800 slugging percentage.  Another to pitching arm, P Austin Voth, started his first game and threw 6 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and fanning 6 batters.  P Trevor Goff, acquired via trade in the off-season, has made 2 bullpen appearances and is 2-0.

Harrisburg Senators (AA) 3-2

C Spencer Kieboom is off to a nice start, collecting 7 hits in 16 at bats (.438).  He has a double, has scored a run, and riven in 5 runs.   OF Issac Ballou is also off to a solid start, collecting 7 hits in 19 at bats (.368).  Ballou has a double and triple, has scored 3 runs, driven in 2 runs, and swiped a base.

Potomac Nationals (A) 5-1

The PNats are off to a strong 5-1 start and a big part of that reason is 3B Drew Ward.  Ward is 10 for 23 (.435) at the plate with a double and 2 home runs.  Ward has scored 10 runs and driven in 3 runs.  He has posted a .739 slugging percentage and a .536 on base percentage.  1B Jose Marmolejos-Diaz had a fine season last year at the rookie level.  This year is off to a 7 for 19 (.368) start with 2 doubles, 1 triple, and 1 home run.  He has scored 8 runs and driven in 4 runs.  Keep an eye on 2015 draft pick P Koda Glover.  Glover is a reliever.  In his debut season last year, Glover was 1-1 with 5 saves and a healthy 1.80 ERA.  Check this out.  Over 30 innings, he yielded just 2 walks all season while fanning 38.  This year, at Potomac, he has appeared in 3 games and has picked up a save.  Through four innings, he has allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, and has walked 2, while striking out 7.

Hagerstown Suns (Low A) 4-3

2015 draft pick Max Schrock is off too a fine start, collecting 9 gist over 24 at bats (.375).  He has 2 doubles, and has scored 6 runs.  P Andrew Lee has made two starts and is 0-0 with a 0.90 ERA.  Through 10 innings, he has permitted 8 hits. 4 walks, and 1 run while striking out 10.

Notable Prospects:

P Lucas Giolito, the top prospect for the Nationals and one of the very top in all of baseball, has made 1 start at Potomac.  He pitched 4 innings and allowed 1 hit and 3 walks, while not allowing a run and fanning 4 batters.  Will see see Lucas in DC soon?  P Erick Fedde, the top Nats pick in 2014, allowed 8 hits, 1 walk, and 2 runs in his first start of 4 innings.  He fanned 7 batters.  P Reynaldo Lopez allowed 5 hits, 3 walks, and 3 runs over five innings in his first start.  Victor Robles has 7 hits in his first 22 at bats with a double, triple, and home run.  He has scored 7 runs, drove in 2 runs, and stolen 3 bases.
