Caps win third straight, down Oilers 4-1

The Washington Capitals have moved back to .500 with a 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers last night.  It was their third consecutive win and moved them to 5-5 overall, 4 points behind division leading Pittsburgh.

Alexander Ovechkin scored his 1-0th goal of the season, setting yet another franchise record, becoming the fastest play to double digit goals in just 10 games.   Ovechkin scored his 10th of the season near the end of the first period to send the Caps into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.  Ovechkin’s goal was assisted by Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson.

Joe Ward continued playing a hot hand, scoring his 3rd goal of the season and the only goal of the second period.  Ward’s tally was assisted by Karl Alzner and John Carlson.  It was his third goal in his last five games.

Nicklas Backstrom scored his second goal of the season just 1:24 into the final frame to give the caps a 3-0 lead.  Johansson and Ovechkin assisted the marker.  Jason Chimera scored the final Caps volley, his second of the season, in his home town in front of family and friends.

Braden Holtby stopped 30 of 31 shots to even out his record on the season at 4-4.  After initially struggling at the start of the season, Holtby has lowered his GAA to 2.78 and increased his save percentage to .919.
