Caps trade down in first round, select D Lucas Johansen

the Washington Capitals, after trading two second round picks, one in 2017 and one in 2018, for F Lars Eller, traded their 26th overall pick to St. Louis for the 28th pick and the Blues third round pick, 87th overall.

With the 28th pick the Caps have selected Defenseman Lucas Johnasen. Johansen has played for the same WHL team that produced another Caps draft pick, defenseman Madison Bowey.  Johansen’s borther is Nashville’s Ryan Johansen.  With some solid forward depth, this isn’t a bad pick for the Caps.  They more than likely were targeting Johansen at 26 overall, but gained an extra third rounder in trading down with the Blues.

In 69 games in the WHL last season, Johansen scored 10 goals and added 39 assists.  He added 2 goals and 6 assists in the WHL playoffs.  He was ranked a anywhere between 26 and 28 in draft rankings. Good value for the Capitals.
