The Washington Capitals downed the Nashville Predators at the Verizon Center tonight 5-2 behind a three goal, first period. The Caps took a first period 3-0 lead and never looked back, improving overall to 15-12-2 on the season.
Troy Brouwer notched the first Caps goal at the 6:44 mark of the opening period. Brouwer’s 6th marker of the season was a marker that came on net presence by Brouwer, a gutsy kind of goal they needed. The goal was assisted by Eric Fehr and Mikhail Grabovski. Alexander Ovechkin. Scored his 22nd of the season to put the Caps up 2-0. Ovechkin’s power play tally came at the 13:08 mark and was assisted by Nicklas Backstrom. Ovechkin’s bomb was classic Alex, coming right off the face off, and barreling past an unsuspecting Marek Mazanec In net for Nashville. Three minutes later, Defenseman Karl Alzner recorded his first goal of the season to send the Caps to an impressive 3-0 lead. Alzner’s shot came from the top of the point, assisted by Mike Green and Backstrom. Nashville would get one goal by Roman Josi before the intermission end.
The Caps and Preds skated to a scoreless second period.
Nate Schmidt scored his first NHL goal of his career at the 3:29 mark of the final frame. Schmidt scored on an absolute bomb fed by a sic pass by Martin Erat to give the Caps the 4-2 lead. Schmidt’s first career tally was perfectly placed to just the left of Mazanec’s glove. Erat and Joel Ward assisted his first career goal. Eric Fehr ended the Caps barrage with his fourth of the season.
Braden Holtby stopped 34 of 36 shots to earn the win. It was his 12th win of the season. Caps outshot the Preds 36-33. Washington was 1-4 on the man advantage while the penalty kill unit was 1-1.
