Boston University got 25 points from D.J. Irving in a 83-77 upset of Maryland at the Comcast Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers (7-5) arrived in College Park with a three game losing streak, but took an early lead, then hit free throws down and held on for the upset win. Dez Wells led the Terps (8-5) with 18 points, while Evan Smotrycz added 15 points and 13 rebounds. Maryland actually led 56-55 with nine minutes to play, but Boston U went on another run and the Terps never seriously threatened again.
With the ACC opener against Georgia Tech only two weeks away, turnovers continue to plague the Terrapins. 17 giveaways against Boston U is a recipe for disaster come conference play and coach Mark Turgeon has plenty of work to do. Sophomore guard Seth Allen remains sidelined, his return from a fractured left foot still uncertain. We do know that he has been shooting three pointers as he works his way back. The Terrapins have the week off for Christmas, returning Sunday night the 29th, hosting Tulsa at 7pm.
